I cleaned it and painted it with hi- temp flat black paint.

You mean just a simple wash to get any dust / debris off before painting it, or did you do something like what Lyric911 suggested (roughing it up with a brillo pad)?

Mine was bare aluminum with no caoting so it was somewhat rough already. I just cleaned it with alchohol first. Prep is key to having the paint stick, if it is really smooth then rough it up so the paint can grab better( like Lyric said).

Paint will work if properly prepped and clear coated, but honestly powder coating is much more durable to the elements and flying debris. Paint will chip and deteoriate from bugs if not cleaned on a regular basis especially if not cleared..
