Which Rear shock? Used FZ1 or new Ohlins?

From everybody I've talked to for the front suspension cheap and easy mod is to drop in the weight appropriate Racetech spring. They go for $115 from racetech or I've found $108 with free shipping from ebay. My local shop said they'd drop it in for $80 (an hours labor) maybe $40 if it's easy to take apart the current fork. If I wanted them to change the fork oil that jumps it up to $200 for fork oil, labor and fork seals.

I personally would do that before swapping for an R1 fork, especially if you don't need the adjustability for a track setup and street setup on the same bike.

I only can notice the weakness in my springs when I'm taking some high speed sweepers and pushing hard on twisty's. Like the ride I took today, I was going mid 80s through some sweepers that were supposed to be taken at yellow traffic sign speed of 60. The Fz1 forks though come with an adjustable rebound and compression setting (rebound on left tube and compression on right tube), although I believe the R1 has rebound & compression on each fork tube giving it a lot more flexibility in settings. I do plan on hitting the track soon and will continue to take spirited rides on the street.

If you are just commuting I would still do the fork springs so that you have the benefit in taking corners at intersections and such where the road has imperfections and uneven surfaces.

What year R1 fit the Fz8?

Just installed my R1 rear with the adapter. Let me tell you, what a difference!!! Even without adjusting anything yet the bike feels so nice!!! Now to take it to a suspension specialist so they can adjust it for my weight and riding style.

It seemed a bit of a stretch. He probably meant the fz1 shock. Did mention later on that some mods were needed

What year R1 fit the Fz8?

Marty- Camo's got an 07 R1 fork on his fz8. to make it work, he also had to buy an r1 wheel since the fz8 wheel won't fit on the r1 fork. He's got a lot more details about it in one of his threads...

Someone mentioned that the r1 fork is a little shorter than the fz8 fork so geometry is changed a bit but I guess Camo would be the guy to speak to the difference.

Go the R1 with Satan's adapter V4. Chalk and cheese on my FZ1. So much so that I won't give you my old shock as I'd be ripping you off at no charge.

Honestly FZ1 shock is crap (I thought that in my first week of owning) FZ8 must be really crap!! Why not spend $180 all up to get an R1 shock in there? That includes Adapter shock and shipping to Australia? I can actually feel adjustments and that it works as a shock not a pogo stick.

I think if you'd had the rebound set proprely it wouldn't feel like a pogo-stick. I went to a race shop adn they set up my suspension. I no longer have the pogo-stick feel and the guy said if I didn't have the rebound right that is exactly what it was doing.

The biggest problem with the Fz1 rear suspension for me is the spring is too soft. With the preload and rebound set correctly I can feel now how the soft spring doesn't give as much control as what would be good for complete control.

If you painted an Ohlins shock to look like a standard Yamaha item, you would find that 70% of riders would say it's shit.

I had lunch today with a bloke in Chicago who has a brand spanking new Ohlins on his 8.
Once the snow fucks off, he promised me a ride!!!!

He may well have a very nice R77 as well by then ;)

Spent 15 months trying to get the FZ1 shock set. I am a stubborn F!!!er. Been riding since well 1970? Raced MX in the 80s. Never found a shock I could not get to work somewhere in the adjustments but this one did it! Fitted the R1 and the improvement was immediate even with the sag set wrong and all settings at minimum. Still working on perfecting everything but after a ride yesterday of about 250ks I think the R1 shock is the best thing I've done. It has also let me work out the front end as I have the rear so close.

Just had an Ohlins S46DR1 shock installed, plus RaceTech springs and valves. I have only put about 30 miles on this setup, but will share my thoughts.

At 6'1" 210, I always felt the stock suspension just might not have been designed for someone my size. The front end seemed to overly compress when coming to a stop (always made the bike seem a little unstable when stopping, especially if coming in a little hot). In regard to the stock rear shock, I am not quite sure how to describe it. I played with the preload - going from 5 to 9, and after each adjustment, would have to convince myself that something actually felt better/different.

Now with the RaceTech front end. Coming to a stop, the front end compression is very controlled, making the bike feel much more stable.

Now with the Ohlins shock. Those Ohlins guys must like a firm/hard ride, because with the factory settings, small bumps would rattle your teeth. After my initial ride, I backed-off the rebound 4 clicks and then went for another ride. Damn, I could already tell a difference. Backed-off another 2 clicks, now we are getting somewhere. Finally, backed-off 1 more click, and think I am where I want to be.

In regard to twisties - because of the weather, I have only hit a few. The only way I can describe it, is that my confidence in the bike through the curves has really increased.

I don't care how you do it ... R1 shock, FZ1 shock, Penske, Ohlins etc. I think it is worth it, and would do it again in a heartbeat.
