what i do is take a little Simple Green/water mix and clean them with a sponge and then i use Windex and a paper towel to take any other remaining oils off. if there are any oils on once the pipes get hot they can get burned in

I did that all winter long and this spring, the pipes were shiny. Great tip!
used to live Louisiana and if you did not keep the bike inside during winter, the pipes would start to pit rust.
Once that starts it is all over.
Polishes work but ones with an abrasive will eventually hurt.

best is to make sure there is no way to get moisture inside at night and that means climate control
I have even tried the "park it on a piece of plywood" trick that is suppose to keep moisture from getting inside the pipes. Wife's tale at best.

I made a joke with the winter, but after 5000km, the exhaust is still brilliant. I never ride in the rain and the bike is in the garage at night.
