Hi has anyone upgraded Fz8's suspension yet.
If so what brand did you go for and did you notice any positive changes to the way the bike handles??

I am thinking of Ohlins front and rear upgrade, any one got that done ??

Are you planning on doing track days? :) All I can say is the only issue I have with the bike is that it's sometimes too nimble just a slight breeze and it makes the bike change its trajectory (though I read putting a larger rear tire fixes this). That said I push it pretty hard and feel the stock suspensions are a really good balance between sporty and comfy. I had a 2009 Speed Triple with the stock suspension tuned by a specialist, and handling on the FZ8 is even better, just slightly less stable in it's trajectory when pushing hard (I did adjust the rear suspension to make it a bit stiffer).

You certainly can't go wrong with Ohlins. Only problem is when you sell the bike that kind of upgrade will probably get you 3-400$ more for the bike while it will cost you 2k$ to get proper upgrade front and rear so unless you plan on doing track days or keeping the bike for many years...

i leave the front fork interior but I send them to a great technician (gianluca colatosti, mupo seller, technician and developer) that make them work perfectly, he make a full revision of the fork and he also worked on the progression and now , when i brake , the front fork never go down as easy as at the begining.... on the rear i put a MUPO AB1 ... woowowowoo

Well yes I am planing on doing some track day when I get all my upgrades done. My project is to get suspension upgrade, adjustable rearsets, lower handlebars, 190 rear tyre and also I would like to put FZ1's engine. I know it sounds like why dont you buy FZ1? But I laready got Fazer8 and I realy love the shape of Fazer8 over Fazer1.
After all that done I will probably keep the bike for many years.

Can I ask how much did you pay for this MUPO shock and can you feel a lot of the diference.

Well..gotta say, you'll have one hell of a bike! I'm also considering the 190 rear tire when it needs to be changed...

190 rear... many people use the 180 instead of 190 ...

the mupo cost me about 1000€...

difference? hell yes! it is another bike, now i can make turn and don't worry to jump off from the bike because on the rear i don't have a spring anymore, i have a shock absorber now... i wish you undersand me... ;-)

I don't know why you bothered buying an FZ8? And why not just go and do track days with the standard bike? Doing all your proposed upgrades still isn't going to turn your FZ into an R1...Not so much "why didn't you buy an FZ1", more why didn't you buy a track bike?

Well I have considered buying R1 but .....

I love shape and position on Fazer, it is definitely better bike for longer trips (1-2 weeks in the saddle) J just want to make it more sport than tourer. And upgrading the bike will make it to be one of its kind when there is thousands R1 on the roads this one will be the only one (hopefully)

Track riding... yeah I probably could buy track bike but see no point. Spending money on another bike, where I still would have to upgrade the suspension on Fazer (one of the biggest costs in my project budget) does not add up to me. I realy want to have very sporty sport-tourer.

Oh and the tyre, I would change it to 190 because FZ1 engine gives more power and torque so more grip in the corners would be a lot of help.

Cheers for all you r comments

Certainly a nice project. And totally understand why you'd prefer the Fz8 over the Fz1, but then would like the engine from the FZ1. If you can afford it, don't see nothing wrong in making it unique :)

These bikes have a down graded R1 engine in them. From what I have been reading you will need the R1 pistons, rings, and cam. I believe the fuel system will not need any upgrades. After that you should be able to tune the bike with the PCV, this should make you roughly around 150hp, you should def not need any more than that. This is prob a much cheaper way to keep the looks of the bike, but get you the power you are looking for.

But with that power, you will def want to upgrade the suspension, at this point you will be looking into Ohlins, or possibly swapping an R1's suspension or somehting along those lines.

humm....that's something to think about...stupid question here, is it just sleeves in the cylinders that would need to be removed to accommodate the R1 pistons?

From what I have read it is a sleeved cylinder and a different cam. With that being said it should be quite an easy upgrade. The only thing I am not positive on is the tuning, but I do not know why you would not be able to retun with the PCV to accomodate the changes. Maybe someone on here that has more tuning experience than I, will be able to chime in.

If I remember right its the 01-03 R1 engine. I would have to look it up again, but those years come to mind!!

Maxton Suspension

Hi has anyone upgraded Fz8's suspension yet.

I am thinking of Ohlins front and rear upgrade, any one got that done ??

I'm taking my Fazer8 down to Maxton in Cheshire for a day or two. They supply for British Superbikes and Isle Of Man TT amongst other events. Workshop is state of the art and build all components in-house. No need to go to the excessively priced Ohlins. Getting front and rear suspension work done. For front, a complete strip out of forks and replace with new cartridges and springs. For rear, a new "non-remote" monoshock unit. They take your weight and notes on riding style, etc and build to your specification. Looking forward to the trip but I reckon I'll be lucky to get in there before the road racing season starts!!

Yeah I spoke to Maxton and they told me to leave the bike for approx 2 weeks to get the shock developed. I was looking at Rt10 monoshock. But now I decided to try Nitron who gave me better price and I am hopeing to get bike there in couple of days to get the shock. At this moment I cant take it down there as I am waiting for some parts and bike is unridable :-( . Hopefuly it will be done by the end of the week ;-)

It would be nice to see what a better cam could get out of this engine. Hopefully someone will develop one in the near future.

FZ1, suspension & power upgrade

I understand where Impostor1981 is coming from. After passing my test I test-rode 3 bikes: BMW F800ST, Yamaha FZ1-N, Yamaha FZ8-N.
After BMW I realised 2 cylinder wasn't for me. FZ1 was crazy power for first big bike. Even with chest slammed on tank felt like I was about to take off! FZ8 was just right for me. Went for faired version Fazer8 with ABS, mainly for the added weather protection (welcome to Scotland!) and have loved the bike ever since. Basically, as Impostor1981 says, the bike is better looking than FZ1, although shares same chassis. The nose, particularly, of the Fazer1000 is ugly in comparison with the Fazer8. The Fazer8 is still turning heads of GSXR, R1, ZXR riders - they're not exactly sure what it is but that's the beauty - it's not a big selling or common bike and yet it looks and sounds fantastic. I've also removed the Fazer side stickers on mine to make it look even more anonymous and stealth-like. Now that I have ridden it for 6 months and covered 4-5k miles I can now see the suspension limitations particularly with the front forks. They are way too soft.
After speaking to Maxton, I was a little disappointed to find that most customers use the postal service to send and return front forks, and just get a rear shock delivered also. To leave the bike there would cost more and be quite an inconvenience. Although you state your weight and riding style to help them build the parts, obviously they aren't able to re-balance the bike physically if you use the postal route. Also, this being NW200, TT, etc time-of-year they are fully booked until after Summer. May go down the Nitron route like Impostor1981 or just get front forks resprung and oiled to start off.
Further update to follow ...
On the power upgrade / retuning - I also agree, now after 6 months of riding Fazer8. I'm fitting a Yoshi R77 and removing some excess weight from the bike which together will improve the response and torque curve. Even without that, I'm still buzzing with the bike's power especially if you kick up at 10,000 rpm!!! Beyond 7,000 rpm the bike becomes a different beast.

Impostor1981 please leave feedback on Nitron when you get it thanks.

Still can't get mine yet, it just started snowing...

But I can comment as the 8 is pretty close to my 6. I rode the 8 at my last test drive, and I found the torque to be awesome over the 6. The suspension was better, but still needs work. I have full ohlins in mind. The power is just awesome. I can honestly say anything over 100hp is over kill for the street. And yes, I have ridden every style and all horsepowers from 10 up to a new zx14 with like 200. My favourite areas are 60ish and 100ish. They just seem to feel normal.

Most important thing on a bike is suspension and brakes. I love the inverted forks, as my 6 has normal ones and they are just rubbish. Brakes are pretty much the same as the 8, and the stainless steel lines add immense power.

So I've read that the FZ1 forks are good, but you need to add in a wheel to the cost. Up here crashed bikes aren't too common, so I've figured ohlins will cost me the same unless I can take apart my dad's FZ1... here is hoping!
