I know there has been a few threads on cameras, but I just got a camera, its a cheap one, but I just wanted to see if I enjoyed makin the movies. My question to you guys is, who has cameras, what type, how did you mount them, and then are you using a video edditing software, and what one?

Thanks
DJ

I have a GoPro Hero Motorsports... Check out some of my videos here: toyohtadude's Channel - YouTube Not all of these are with the GoPro but any videos on a ride are certainly from the GoPro. Most were taken in 1080p but some in 720p 60 FPS.

I have a mount on my helmet, my swingarm, the suction cup mount and I used to have one on my radiator cover but that was replaced with the sport scoops so I'll have to come up with other mount points. I've also used it on the outside window of my truck and this year I want to try it on the bottom of my kayak so it films what is under the water.

the wife has a Drift, and I got her the suction mount (she's got fairings) and I grabbed a bar mount, but I want to try the suction mount off the tank or the plastic air cover jammy when I get another bike.

Just got the latest GoPro HD 2 that has an external mic jack. Will be trying it out this weekend, I'll keep you posted, but I should finally be able to have video with decent sound quality where you hear the engine and not the wind/camera vibrations.

i have not posted any videos yet.
but i have a go-pro mounted to the bars looking forward. and a contour mounted on the rear fender looking back.
have been tail-gated and when they see the cam....bingo they back off... fast.

still looking for a good program to work with. read $$$$$$.

seen a number of videos were the cam is mounted low on the forks.

unknown why people post up a video of just them on the bike.

and the videos of helmet mounted suck as there head keeps moving around..as it should. but makes for a bad video.

good luck and hope to see your videos soon.

Update...nop, still not able to get good audio from the GoPro Hero 2 HD when mounted on the tank. I think the only way is by mounting on helmet or chest so that the vibrations of the bike don't transmit to the camera. Really disappointed as even with the external microphone, the jack on the camera appears to be transmitting some static/vibration sounds...

I sent them an email but meanwhile I ordered a digital recorder, I think it's the only way I'll be able to get crystal clear audio...

Here's with external mic:

Here's a test with skeleton housing. At around 4500rpm, the camera just doesn't like the vibration frequency...

Here's another try with different microphone cable. GoPro offered me to send them my cam so they can have it checked, but I'll try to find another microphone before giving up. This last test sounds slightly better but I really want high quality audio for when I have a nice ride to film.

best way to not have wind noise is to put a sock over it.

no really, a wind sock.

might try a little bit of electrical / duck tape on the sides of the cam to keep the cam from shaking in the case.
was that a battery? or a display unit?

i do not have the extended batt, but do have the display and it does not make noise when getting shaken up.

if only at a specific rpm then why is your bike doing this? aka is your bike doing a vibe at this rpm that is not done else were?
as for the skeleton case..just do not use it.

let us know how it all works out please.
on my buell blast i have not had these issues...not that i have noticed.

good luck.

Yeah thing is a Buell and a Fz8 have very different vibration frequencies. It seems the V-Twins and parallele twin videos on youtube sound way better then when on buzzy inline-4s.

The external mic is isolated in my back pocket in my jacket wrapped in a towel so even if the case rattled the microphone shouldnt pick that up.

When you shake your camera (just the camera no battery pack or monitor or case on it) you don't hear anything like this?

I ordered my digital audio recorder yesterday and it arrived today! So here's a first test. Don't look at image quality, just the sound. Pretty happy with the sound now, but I have a few ideas to improve it even more so that really all you here is engine.

IAMRAMEKIN has a prety extensive youtube chanel which has been going a number of years, He's now worked up the food chain onto the FZ8 and he seems to like it :)

Would be good to get some feedback on the bike and the audio and visual aspects of recording on bikes. I have a very very cheap camera and have yet to get some decent footage on the FZ8.....here's a small vid from a year or so back on a dinky Yamaha R125.........I do have some FZ8 footage on youtube but I'll not make you suffer trying to see whats going on....LOL

Hi..

Where do you have installed your digital recorder?
I film with a Gopro and a digital audio recorder.. but have lots of wind noise in my audio recorder( Zoom H2 ). Are you using a external mic on the device, or using internal mic?

My videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/tiagovs2000/videos

I use this Philips audio recorder:
Philips Portable Digital Recorder on Vimeo

I use the external stereo mic that comes with it and have the recorder in my front pocket and the microphone is places in my back protector pocket wrapped in a towel to cancel out as much of the wind noise as possible. But I'm still trying stuff to keep out the wind noise as much as possible without cutting down too much on the overall sound...

If you check my previous posts here you'll see tests with external microphone directly on the GoPro and it still pretty much sucks as the jack seems to be picking up static/vibration noises so really the only solution is having an external sound recorder like you're doing. It's just a matter of figure the best place to put it and best way to isolate the microphone without going to far.

The FZ8 is pretty much everything I have been looking for in a motorcycle. The bike is really super fun to ride, very smooth, turns very well, and is comfortable to ride.

I ride a lot. So much so, I've considered selling my car. Riding 60 miles on a ninja 250, and on a R6 is a total nightmare. On the FZ8, it's not a problem at all for me.

The only downside to the FZ8 is I find the kickstand REALLY annoying to get to, and I don't seem to be getting great gas mileage with the bike thus far. Although, the bike is still really new for me, so I'm having more fun with it than I am trying to conserve gas at the moment. :)

I'm really glad that Yamaha finally brought this bike to the states, and I don't regret the purchase at all. I do not see any reason for someone to go with the 2012 model. Save some money and get the 2011 if you can find it.
