Question about our speedo wires (?)

I'm just a little cofused on how the fz8's speedometer cable works. I know it connects to a sensor inside the trans, but does the odometer also work off the trans? and if so, does it run of the same wire/cable?
I have been thinking of changing the final gear ratio and was checking to see if the odometer will also be thrown off by this as well as the speedo? And could these both be corrected by a speedo healer?

I can provide you a wiring diagram for fazer8/ABS. I would assume that its same with fz8.
