FZ1 shock in FZ8

I have just changed over my shock to an FZ1 one. If you are on a budget or not this is an awesome mod. The kick you usually get from going over a bump from the standard shock is gone. Other than needing a touch more compression, for the road it feels great. The rear doesn't squat down as much under hard acceleration. It would be good enough if you want to do a few track days too. I am using the highest preload setting and the preload for the rear is now set right for my body weight (110kgs) but for 2 up riding I will need to get a heavier spring.

Camo was kind enough to donate it to me, but you can get them from the US for around $100. You could also ask on the FZ1 sister site if there are any Aussie owners that may have upgraded their shocks and have them lying around in the shed.

Yes I fitted it myself. It takes about half an hour to do and is easier than taking the tank off in my opinion. See my guide here

Old next to new. The FZ1 shock has the silver spring. You can see that it is thicker.

Hmmm, Bren and I have both posted on the FZ1 site re buying an FZ1 rear shock.

So, far it has been suggested that we do the R1 Rear shock instead.

From what I have seen & read (Dr Doom's mod), you have to modify the the FZ8's regulator bracket to fit the R1's shock and the use an adapter. I don't mind the adapter, but I don't want to slice and dice my bike.

So, re the R1 mod to FZ8, am I reading that right?

I can't find the spring being sold seperate on the Ohlin site. I think you'll have to contact them, the shock and spring combo with piggyback , does look awesome. Not that i would ever spend money on suspension for the touring riding i do, well maybe if i ever get over 90 km/h i will consider spending a few $$$ on the old girl.

The bracket thing looks factory and doesn't affect the function of anything. If you can get an r1 shock adapter, I say go for it.

a lot of the FZ1'ers are on there saying their shocks are shit... But compared to the FZ8 shock, it appears to be a lot better than ours.

I only weigh 85 kg, 176cm tall- so i dont think i would need more than a FZ1 shock upgrade my build?

Thanks Doom. ...but it comes back to having to cut into part of the bike. It does look like a simple cut and hole, but I really don't want to have to do that.

However, one of the guys in the FZ1 site said there is a old and a new version of the bracket. Maybe the newer version might be better, ie no cutting? Do you know if you got the new or the old version.

I have one of the older ones, but I'm not sure which version. There really is no way of telling how they will fit on our bike since we are slightly different than the FZ1. I sent a prototype of one of the new versions to a member here, but he disappeared right after that.

I don't think the FZ1 shock is all that bad and you get alot of bang for your buck. It's not perfect, but for street riding I couldn't imagine really needing anything else. It would be good enough for track days too, if you are there to have fun. Only if you wanted to have a serious track weapon would I upgrade to a racing shock, then I'd probably have a different bike. The only extra thing I need to do is upgrade the spring for 2 up riding, so if your 100kg or below you won't need to change the spring.

I'm saying nothing other than I found the FZ1 shock adequate for my fat ass. If the Penske hadn't have come up dirt cheap, I'd still have the FZ1 shock.

Bluey on the FZ1 site has just offered his rear shocky up for nix!

So, Bren if you want it is yours, otherwise I will have it, if you don't (He's in the Blue Mountains too, a little closer to home for you)

Oh yeah, I have ended up doing F'all at work today because this :D
