Help can't get key out of gas cap

So I purchased a black no key cap from rideitmoto and after removing the old one I can get the key out. You need to put the key in to get to another screw. Using want to remove the one I just installed again to get te key out. I can't see where a release would be.

I did that multiple times. I wonder since it's not on the bike is there some release that happens when it's bolted on

I already have the new one installed. The issue is I have the old one in my hand with the key inside still and I can't get it out

Try closing the cap and squeezing the two small tabs that hold the lid closed onside the filler neck. They're the movable tabs on the bottom of the cap. That may release the key so you can pull it out of the lock. IIRC, it's a safety device so you can't start the bike and drive off with the cap open.
