No it will help the bike, you'll notice the difference and hear it also... I did the mod on my bike long before I got my power commander, zero problems

what are the gains after remapping? I think the bike has enough power stock, I'm just wondering if the mods are worth it.

Well the ais mod has no real performance gain, and the air box mod is free and a great thing for the bike, the factory hole Yamaha uses is a joke and chokes the bike, do the air box mod I guarantee u won't regret it and will enjoy the benefit like then rest of us

How do you know that? Are you an engineer? Did you do any air flow calculations? Maybe that's as big as it needs to be and making it bigger has no benefit and may even have a downside. Maybe there is more to designing an intake than making the hole as big as possible.

Just throwing that out there for your consideration before you declare Yamaha's design a joke.

So is there a downside to plugging the AIS hose? I have an an aftermarket exhaust and don't like the "decel pop". Call it whatever you want but it's basically backfiring and does not sound good to my ears. But before I do this, I'd like to know if there is any possible downside to plugging the AIS hose. Thanks.

From a performance stand point its common sense more air means u can use more fuel witch makes more power... just cause the factory does it doesn't mean its the best, that hole could have been that small as an economy thing, I've expierence no I'll side effect and neither has anyone else that has done it so from what I can tell there are now downsides... its not like manufactured never make stupid decisions

From what I understand get a Power Commander and you'll get rid of the popping with the proper map. Also keep in mind that designs by manufactures are done so for many reasons such as market placement in categories such as insurance, wide variety of customers, etc. if they came out with the most powerful bike possible it would eliminate potential customers. Bikes are designed with specific targets like the FZ8 is designed as a commuter bike. This fact doesn't mean that a user of this specific bike shouldn't modify the bike to meet their desires. Just realize that if you modify one thing that it will effect others and additional mods may be necessary to take full advantage.

Everything is built to a budget and as we have a low cost bike, I highly doubt Yamaha used their best engineers or spent alot of time on this task. Also they need to design stuff to meet emissions and noise targets not just to get the best alright power or torque curve.

I'm not saying that chopping the airbox is right or wrong, just putting up more ideas for consideration. I also wouldn't say that Yamaha's design is a joke, more of a compromise of all the factors that engineers need to consider when designing this stuff. Our own personal aims are much more simpified.

Personally I have modded the airbox and have felt benefits from it. Unfortunatley I can't afford to do a dyno run everytime I change everything to quantify the change.

Question. What does the actually AIS do? Is it an emissions thing? Why do it if there is no real performance gain?

If I wanted more power, I would 've bought a bigger bike. I love the FZ8 for what it is. What I'm saying is, if I do all the mods possible, what do I say when my buddies stock CBR1000-RR blows me away in a race..............:idk:

Why would u be racing a liter bike... its gonna beat u regardless and besides why does it matter there free mods... FREE!!!!!

And the a.I.s is an emissions system it injects fresh air into the engine on the exhaust stroke, its to help move the unburnt gas out of the exhaust.. the pips are always there. It the stock muffler is great at killing sound, the back fire is from the fresh air combining with the burning hot gas in the exhaust, reason for the mod are 1. To remove the popping/backfire 2.if u have the auto tune for PVC then u need to disconnect it for the auto tune to get a correct Afr from the o2 sensor

Blocking the AIS doesn't eliminate popping on decel does it? I thought that's what the block off plates were for?
Changing to a high flow air filter and making the intake bigger is going to change the air/fuel ratio is it not?
Free mod, yes.
Benefits, maybe. I think probably very minimal though....
So in all, why do this if you're not going to run a power commander and do it properly?

Block off plates and blocking the ais accomplish the same thing, one cost money and removed the whole system and one is free...yea it will change the Afr and to be on the safe side personally I wouldn't recommend a HF air filter along with the air box mod without a power commander, don't wanna lean the bike out more, the bikes computer can adjust for changes how much I don't know. personally I tested my bike against my friend on his zx6r before and after the air box mod, I noticed the difference it wasn't massive but noticeable... but after the PVC. Holy crap its like a new bike

Isn't this the point of mods.?, or is it just to beat stock 800's.......:rof:

Even with all the mods u can possibly do to this engine short of forced induction the bikes not meant to compete with a 1000. The fz8 is an 800 for the torque its HP is more inline with a 600... I can beat my friends 2011zx6r up to 100 with a decent gap... after that he closes and passes.. they rev a lot higher... only way u can beat a 1000 with the 8 is if your a much better rider then the other guy
