HID's do get very hot, sounds completely normal to me. You can usually run 35 watt kits in halogen headlight housing with no problems. If you want a 55 watt kit I'd recommend projectors though

I would recommend powder coating the exhaust. They bake the paint on so it's very heat resistant and durable. But depending on what you want to spend that might be out of the question.
Otherwise go to any auto parts store, they usually have a large variety of heat resistant spray paint and they...
Haha yeah...I'm starting the process of fixing the free dents that came with the bike and repainting the whole thing. Should make for a good winter project
