I had the same feeling as you about the stock tires. I picked up Pilot Power 3 front and rear (120/70 | 180/55) and they haven't let me down; I'm extremely confident with them. I have about 4k miles on them and it's looking like I'll be replacing the back by February with the same tire...

The pillion compartment is not water-tight to begin with. When I wash my bike I take the seat off and the compartment certainly gets soaked. There is no sign of corroded parts, water damage, or anything else that would cause me concern about water getting in there. Of course you must be mindful...

Everyone I've taken on rides has had nothing bad to say. However I wouldn't enjoy doing long distance, 2up, on the fz8.

Rear wheel chatter from a high rev downshift... I know damping in the stock shock is a few notches above pathetic but would increasing the preload make it worse, better?

A group ride in the city? How is that even fun? Too bad the brake checker wasn't the one who paid the ultimate price. He should be held liable for the whole incident.
