The FZ8 does have stepper-motor controlled sub-throttles.

Sounds normal to me. If you lift the tank and remove the air box lid and peer down into the air funnels when you key on you'll see the sub-throttle plates cycle during this time. The PCM is checking their function. At least some of those nifty sounds is coming from the sub-throttle stepper motor.

When you turn the key from off to on what sounds do you hear from under the tank? Has that changed? I'm wondering if the subthrottles are doing something weird on you. Might be interesting to lift the tank and pull the top cover off the airbox. I'd also pull the intake funnels off to give you...

I love the look and performance of those bikes but at 48 years of age, the ergos are just too evil on those things for my neck & back. They'd be fun to have for really short stints but for the sort of riding I do, a more upright sport tourer would be a better choice for me. Besides, I shudder...

I like the semi-faired nature of my Fazer 8 but there doesn't seem to be many like it out there right now. Mostly purely nakeds or SS/fully faired bikes. I do like the look of the BMW S1000R and the Tuono V4. My current plan is to keep the Fazer for a long while yet. :)

I just did mine recently. I didn't take the tank off, just lifted it. The airbox definitely needs to come out. Once that's done threading it up through the frame to the left side bar is easy. It's a bit fiddly to thread it under the wiring harness on the left side, where the "bend" in the cable...

I went up from a CBR500R to my '11 Fazer 800 last year. I love this bike and keep modding it for fun. Pros: - great sound with a Yoshi R77 and an Akra race header :) - comfy rider triangle - handles well despite milquetoast suspension - good wind protection at highway speeds (Fazer bodywork)...

The throttle tube on the handlebar. The R6 tube has a different ramp ratio that opens the throttle more quickly for a given input angle. I think it also reduces the total angle required to get to WOT.
